The owner of a food handling enterprise, when implementing a HACCP system must ensure that the system is in accordance with the principles as provided for by the joint Food and Agriculture Organization / World Health Organization (“FAO/ WHO”) etc.

    To monitor metal fragment contamination in food during stream flow, two aspects are required to be considered.

                                        Depending on the location, the gauss strength, and the cleanable frequency ability, a magnet can be considered as a:

    PRP (Prerequisite Program), which is defined by ISO as the basic conditions and activities necessary to maintain a hygienic environment throughout the food chain that is suitable for the production, handling, and provision of safe final products and safe foods for human consumption.

    CCP (Critical Control Point), which is any step in which hazards can be prevented, eliminated, or reduced to acceptable levels. CCPs are usually practices/procedures which, when not done correctly, are the leading causes of foodborne illness outbreaks.

    OPRP (Operational Prerequisite Program Control) which is the measure or combination of control measures applied to prevent or reduce a significant food safety hazard to an acceptable level.

    Let it, at this point, be reminded that the South African regulation R908 recommends that a firm can handle food only if the HACCP system is fully implemented.

    Thereof, it is crucial for food handling enterprises to implement and maintain an effective annual magnet verification and validation program – in as much as magnets DO lose strength over time, even more rapidly than expected, under some circumstances of use; thus, even when a magnet seems to be extracting metal fragments.
